Haunted Happenings

Love Halloween?  Check out Haunted Happenings in Witch City, otherwise known as Salem, MA.  In addition to ghost tours, costume parades, and all things spooky, be sure to check out some of the great museums Salem has to offer.

The Salem Witch Museum provides a glimpse into the Salem Witch Trials of 1692.  And don't forget to visit The House of the Seven Gables, the historic home that inspired Nathaniel Hawthorne to write his gothic classic by the same name!

UHS Book Club

The new UHS book club had their first meeting Tuesday afternoon after school.  We discussed some of our favorite reads, enjoyed some light refreshments, and decided what we would like to read for our next meeting.

We will be reading The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and will be meeting Wednesday, 11/10 after school at 2:00pm to discuss the book.  All are welcome and we hope you can join us!

Teen Tribune

Teen Tribune is a daily news site specifically for teens.  Each day, links to the day's most compelling news stories for teens are posted.  The neat thing about this site is that news stories are selected by teens working closely with professional journalists.  Teens can submit links to stories they'd like to share, submit their own stories and photos, and comment on the stories they read.

Take a look and stay informed.

Teen Read Week is here!

Stop by the UHS library and celebrate Teen Read Week, October 17th - 23rd.  Teen Read Week is an initiative of the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) and gives librarians, educators, parents, and teens a chance to celebrate books, libraries, and the art of reading.  We've got a display here at the UHS library of 2009 winners of the Teens' Top Ten list, as well as nominations for the 2010 Teens' Top Ten list.  Winners will be announced later this week.  These are books voted on by other teens, so stop in and see what your peers are reading!

For more teen reading fun, visit the YALSA blog here.

It's Kind of a Funny Story

Some of you may have seen the recently released movie It's Kind of a Funny Story which is in theaters now.  What some of you may not know is that this movie is based on a novel of the same title by author Ned Vizzini.  We have a copy of this book in the UHS library.  Stop by and check it out!

If you decide you like Vizzini's novel, visit the School Library Journal website here for an article reviewing similar novels.

Advanced Review Copies are here

Occasionally, publishers will send the UHS library Advanced Review Copies (ARC) of books that have not yet been published but are still buzz-worthy.  If you don't mind a few typos (most of these books haven't made it through the final editing process yet), this is a great way to preview some potential bestselllers before anyone else gets to!

I'd love to get a group of students together to preview these books for me as they come in, so stop by the circulation desk periodically to see what's new.  We've already got the first batch circulating!

New Books for October

New titles for October are in at the library - check out the list here!  We've got new fiction, nonfiction, manga, and reference titles available.

In addition to our new books, the UHS library now has a subscription to several Salem Press databases in the areas of health, history, literature, and science.  These are a great resource for class assignments and research papers so be sure to check them out.  Need help navigating the databases?  Stop in and see Mrs. Fournier for a tutorial.

Happy World Smile Day!
