Sign up in the library for the Summer Job Application Workshop if you're looking for a job and have questions about the application process. The workshop will be held on Thursday, June 5, after school in the library.

At the workshop, we'll talk about:
  • how to fill out a job application.
  • the dos and don'ts of interviewing.
  • what you need to know about work permits.
  • the answers to your questions about applying for a job.

If you have any questions, speak with Ms. Charpentier or Mrs. Plasse.

2014 Summer Reading

The options for next year's summer reading book discussion are now available. Here's what you need to know about summer reading for this year:
  • Participation in summer reading will appear on your report card as a pass/fail.
  • To pass and get the extra credit points, you need to do three things:
    • Read one of the books on the list.
    • Keep a reading journal.
    • Participate in the book discussion in September.
That's it. If you have any questions, talk to Ms. Charpentier. The full list, with more detailed instructions, is here, or if you'd rather judge a book by its cover, browse the summer reading Pinterest board. Book selection will open during Directed Study on Thursday, May 29.

Free YA Audiobooks from Sync

If you like listening to audiobooks or haven't given them a try yet, check out Sync this summer. Sync offers 2 free audiobooks - a recent title and a classic that share a theme - during each week of the summer. The first week begins this Thursday, May 15, with free audio downloads of Eoin Colfer's WARP: The Reluctant Assassin and H.G. Wells's The Time Machine. Check out the summer's full schedule of titles here, and get some listening in this summer.

You do need to download the OverDrive Media Console in order to download these audiobooks on your iPad or smartphone. This is the same app/download you need in order to borrow eBooks and audiobooks from the public library; the first 2 steps of the eBooks and Audiobooks on OverDrive tutorial will help you set up the Media Console, or talk to Ms. Charpentier for help. (You can also download them to a computer and then upload them to an MP3 player.)

Interested, but afraid you'll forget to download each week? You can sign up to get email or text alerts for each week's new titles.

May 29 Book Club Pick

If you've been enjoying the recent popularity of post-apocalyptic dystopias like The Hunger Games and Divergent, join Book Club after school in the library on Thursday, May 29, to discuss dystopian novels and a classic of the genre: Jack London's The Scarlet Plague.

From Goodreads: The year is 2072, and the earth has been depopulated by a plague epidemic that struck in 2013. The victims of the scarlet plague are dead within an hour or less of the first symptoms appearing. 60 years later an old man, Professor James Howard Smith, attempts to pass the flame of knowledge to his reluctant grandsons, who have known only a savage existence in an overgrown world.

You can download a copy from Project Gutenberg, or stop by next week for a paper copy. Hope to see you then!

If you enjoyed the last book club pick, The Hound of the Baskervilles, try some of these other mysteries.
